Pumpkins

Spring

The spring means it is time to spread the manure, till the fields, and plant the seed. This time is somewhat intense because of the short window we have to plant. We plant over 20 different types of winter squash and over 25 different types of pumpkins.

Summer

Once the pumpkins and squash plants get started, they just take off. When the hot weather hits, you can mark the length of a vine in the morning and check the difference in the evening. That difference can be 2 inches to as much as a foot plus. It is amazing how fast they can grow. It’s still a lot of work, although we do have some fun in the summer cooling off with the irrigation!

Fall

This is where the fun really begins. Well it starts out fun. The colors are so full and vibrant on each and every field. We check out the big pumpkins and the small ones and all the different types of squash as well. We have many people pick up loads and loads of pumpkins from the field but we also harvest and arrange the pumpkins and squash up in a field closer to the farm house. And with our sore backs and tired legs we usually round out the season by donating some pumpkins to the local school for the kids to paint.
